2014 saw the release of Steven Wilson’s Cover Version. Compiled onto one CD for the first time, this 12 track set comprises 6 Steven Wilson originals and 6 covers of songs by Alanis Morissette, Abba, The Cure, Momus, Prince and Donovan, released on the rare Cover Version singles between 2003-10.

The original single was made up of one cover version along with one new, self-written composition. This proved to be the first of a series of Cover Version releases as over the next few years he released a further five singles. Each of the CD singles were limited to 3,000 copies, with the final release (Cover Version VI) coming in a special box to house all six CDS, with artwork designed by Carl Glover and a booklet of portraits of Steven by Hajo Mueller.

These tracks provide a fascinating insight into both Wilson’s musical taste and his development as a solo artist.

“…one of the strongest, most prolific and multifaceted songwriters and producers of the last couple decades… be it his variation on a classic tune or something solely his, Wilson creates one remarkable experience after another on this collection. The most impressive part of all is how well he makes widely unalike pieces sound like siblings to his own makings, so everything fits together seamlessly whether or not Wilson wrote it.” Popmatters

“With a more minimal approach in both instrumentation and production, Cover Version may be less formal than his later solo work, but it is no less creative, well-conceived, or executed; therefore it is just as enjoyable as his later work. Having these singles now available in one place is a prize for fans who missed them initially.” AllMusic
